Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

Monaro High School's 'Bring Your Own Device' refers to a technology strategy where students bring a personally owned device (laptop) to school for the purpose of learning.

BYOD is no longer required for students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Only students in Years 11 and 12 are expected to BYOD.

It is important to note that the Department of Education provides network access in all schools as well as necessary learning tools e.g. Microsoft. From a software perspective, all that your child’s device will need is a Windows based operating system, we suggest you leave the purchase of software until a later stage.

There is much published research on the impact of one-to-one computer approaches in schools. A significant amount of this research has found many positive effects such as:

• students became more self-directed learners, more engaged and motivated
• significant gains in attainment of 21st century skills, skills necessary for future employment prospects
• changes to teacher delivery methods that better cater for students in the digital era.

With this in mind, there is little wonder that there is enthusiasm to continue with a one-to-one ratio of devices to students. Since 2021, to support families with the cost associated with devices MHS has made a significant commitment to increase class access to school provided ‘banks of devices’ for classes in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. This commitment means Year 7-10 students are no longer required to BYOD.
