NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Three lucky Monaro High students and Miss Godden were lucky enough to experience a guided tour with a Commonwealth Olympian of the AIS training centre in Canberra and to experience the interactive digital sportex section the AIS offers.

It was a super fun experience, an excellent trip to and from Canberra and we would like to thank the AIME program for the invitation and for having us.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

Little Shop of Horrors

Beware the man eating plant growing at Monaro High School

A large carnivorous plant is growing at Monaro High School – all under the careful love and attention of the Little Shop of Horrors musical team. The plant, named Audrey II, or Twoey, the main character of the horror musical, originates from outer space and requires human blood to survive.

Monaro High School’s Little Shop of Horrors musical is based on the 1960’s film directed by Roger Corman. For the past few months students from Years 7 to 12 and teachers from all learning areas have worked tirelessly to bring the production together in time for the opening night on Thursday, 27 June.

“It’s been a challenging and fulfilling experience” said Year 12 student Zara Farrell, who plays Audrey alongside co-star Marcus Hildyard playing Seymour. “Many different groups have worked together to make this happen and we are really excited to share it with the community.”

“One of the biggest challenges for the show was the making of ‘Audrey II’, the blood thirsty plant” continued Miss Farrell. The plant has been made with the assistance of the Visual Arts and Industrial Technology teachers. As Audrey starts from a small pot plant, three different versions have had to be designed and constructed. The largest of which will ‘swallow’ some of the cast.

Auditions for the show began in March this year, and since then more than 30 students have been spending hours rehearsing, practising their lines and leaning new songs and lyrics as well as working on set design, lighting and the plant puppets. This musical follows other successful musicals produced by the school including Calamity Jane in 2016 and Singing in the Rain in 2012.

While a man eating plant may seem a little scary, the show is great fun for school aged children and adults alike, so it will make a nice family night out. The Little Shop of Horrors is playing at Cooma Little Theatre on 27, 28 and 29th June at 7pm. Tickets are $20 per adult and $15 per school student and can be bought online at www.trybooking.com/BCSVN . Or check out the Monaro High School facebook page for details.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

MHS Basketball NT Tour 2019

The Monaro High Basketball tour group No.6 recently returned from the Northern Territory after touring Darwin, Katherine and Kakadu. The group consisted of 22 students, 4 staff and 3 parents. Monaro High School basketballers participated in games vs Katherine High school, Palmerston Power club side, Darwin High School and Palmerston Senior College. The students can be congratulated on their great effort both on and off the court with both teams winning 2 of their 4 matches against strong competition. The students had the added challenge of adjusting to the heat with one of their matches played outside. The group was lucky enough to attend the Darwin Dawn service and Anzac Day Parade. A proud moment for the group was watching ex Monaro High School student and tour alumni Amy Fraser marching with the Australian Army. Other highlights included a cruise of Katherine Gorge which was professionally operated coincidently by another ex MHS student Daniel Robertson and thoroughly enjoyed by all the group. The group was fortunate to visit Kakadu National Park and learn more about Indigenous culture and Australian history and the 360 degree view of Kakadu at Ubirr was a special experience. Appealing to their adventurous side the students were treated to a spectacular Jumping crocodile cruise where they learned more about Saltwater Crocodiles and forged an even greater respect for the animals. There was no concern regarding people obeying the NO Swimming/ Danger signs. Thank you to the great team of staff and parents and a fantastic group of students. The students trained hard in the lead up to the tour and can be commended for representing their school and Cooma with distinction. We were lucky to see some beautiful places, meet some wonderful people, play some excellent basketball and survive the heat!
The tour group would like to thank Cooma Basketball for their support along with the many individuals and businesses that supported the Cooma Basketball dinner fundraiser for the team;
Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

HSC Excursion to ‘The Crucible’
Recently seven HSC students travelled to Sydney for an overnight excursion to see a performance of the HSC text ‘The Crucible.’
Thursday morning saw a short journey to Bella Vista Farm, Parramatta where the play was being performed in a 200 year old shed, the smell of sheep and gaps in the walls certainly added to the atmosphere of the production. The numerous burning candles also created a unique sense of smell, evoking the period. Students were seated extremely close to the action with water from the stage flying into the audience.
It was certainly an enjoyable two days in Sydney with Monaro High School students demonstrating the highest levels of behaviour and demonstrating they are a credit to the school.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

On Monday 6 Monaro High School History students attended the Cooma Library's WW1 Centenary presentation where they delivered their research on a local WW1 soldier, Corporal Ernest Albert Corey - a true Australian hero.

This was a 'practice run' as the group were invited to attend the Belgian Embassy on Tuesday 13 November as part of their 'Never the Last Post' WW1 centenary commemorations. Each student planted a Poppy at the Belgian Embassy in remembrance of Australian Soldiers who died in Belgium. The group then presented their research to the Ambassador to Belgium and other Embassy staff along with 3 other rural schools. Dr Brendan Nelson, Director of the Australian War Memorial addressed the group with a collection of anecdotes about his time as Ambassador to Belgium and in his current role as Head of the AWM. After a tour of the WW1 Gallery of the AWM, where they saw Corporal Corey's Medals including the Military Medal with 3 Bars, the group attended the Last Post Ceremony where Jason Kelly laid a wreath on behalf of Monaro High School.

Well done to Chelsea Blacka, Brenna Clayton, Ella Davis, Cassie French Jason Kelly and Gabbie Perrin for respectfully representing MHS at these events. Mrs Schouten and Mrs Riley are very proud of them.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

During the school holidays Abby Douch, Year 7 and Shelley Kleven, Year 8 and represented NSW at the 2018 Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships hosted by Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships and Equestrian Victoria at Werribee Equestrian Centre, Victoria.

Abby riding Rainwood Park Melaleuca competed in the Secondary Working Hunter, a three phase competition and placed 3rd in Led, 9TH in rider and 12th in the jumping phase. These scores then placed Abby 8th in the overall Open Secondary Working Hunter National Championship. Abby was also one of the 4th highest scoring NSW riders and subsequently a member of the NSW scoring team to help NSW take out the overall Secondary Show Horse Section National Championship.

Abby also loaned her other horse Rosegate High Alto to a Western Australian rider for the event to allow them to compete and that combination took out 13th place overall representing WA in the Secondary Showhorse.

Shelley Kleven riding Amaranda Moet competed in both Dressage and Combined Training. On Moet Shelley placed 6th in the Open Novice Freestyle Dressage, 3rd in the Intermediate (Year 7-9) 2.2 Novice Dressage and 12th in the 2.3 Intermediate (Year 7-9) Novice Dressage. These scores then also placed Shelley 8th overall in the Intermediate Secondary Novice Dressage Championship which is quite a feat for a pony against the larger horses.

Shelley then rode her second qualified horse Neversfelde Jinx and took out 7th in the Open Elementary Freestyle Dressage and 8th in the Open 3.3 Elementary Dressage.

Both riders and support crew/s thoroughly enjoyed the trip and are already looking forward to hopefully qualifying for 2019.

MHS presented "Legacy" which explores the idea that life can be long and short and we should not wait to make our mark on the world. We should live our lives today in a way that will leave a legacy for the future.

Seven New School Zone Offences

Reinforcing safety in school zones

8 February 2018

Seven new school zone offences enforced from 1 February 2018.

To help schools keep the school zone safer for all pedestrians and drivers there are seven new traffic offences with new fines.

None of the seven offences attract demerit points when committed elsewhere on the road but now in a school zone they each come with two points.

The changes are:

1. Stopping in intersection - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

2. Stop within 20m of intersection (traffic lights) - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

3. Stop within 10m of intersection (no traffic lights) - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

4. Stop near bicycle crossing lights - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

5. Obstruct access to ramp/path/passageway - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $330 and 2 demerit points.

6. Not parallel park in the direction of travel - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points.

7. Parallel park close to dividing line - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points.
